Las primeras emisiones de monedas mexicanas antiguas se conocen como monedas de Carlos y Juana, por mostrar en el anverso los nombres de los reyes españoles. La frase fue acuñada en latín (CAROLUS ET IOHANA REGES), de acuerdo a las costumbres de la época.
Las monedas de Carlos y Juana fueron troqueladas a mano, golpeando los cospeles hasta estampar sobre estos los diseños. Aun así, su factura es impecable.
Como dato curioso, ya en estas monedas podemos encontrar la divisa PLUS ULTRA, presente en muchas monedas españolas a lo largo de la historia, incluso en las pesetas de Franco. Estas monedas son extremadamente raras y escasas. De lo que se desprende que son muy valiosas y deseadas por coleccionistas con alto poder adquisitivos.
Solo para hacernos una idea, en 2008 se subastaron dos ejemplares de Monedas Antiguas de 8 reales de Carlos y Juana por los que se pagaron entre los 300 y 400 mil dólares. Se estima que, en la actualidad, una de estas podría subastarse hasta en 1 millón de dólares.
